Last week, Jen and I both quit our jobs and moved into the van full time with our bikes, climbing gear, and the Murphy dog. We are going to spend the next year on the road, climbing, biking, seeing places we always wanted to see, and spending more time in the places we’ve visited in the past and want to explore more.
To answer some frequently asked questions…
Why?
All the things we want to do require us to be relatively it, so we need to do them before retirement age. also, nothing is guaranteed. Each of us have fathers who died way too early, and as if to drive the point home, our friend Meg died in an ice climbing accident two days after we left.
What’s the plan?
Nothing is set in stone. Generally chase good weather to climb and bike as much as possible. We have a few places in mind, but no real schedule.
Are we working on the road?
No, the point is to not work.
Are we doing any sponsorships for the trip?
No, the point is to not work.
Am I shooting any matches?
Unfortunately, no. Logistically it just isn’t going to work. This is the only thing I’m bummed about missing.
Well, there you have it. It used to be that back in the day people would joke that if you didn’t make something of yourself, you’d end up living in a van down by the river. Now, people hope to make enough money to one day live in a van down by the river. Either way, we now live in a van, and we will definitely be camped by lots of rivers. However you spin it, this seems like the right move to me.
