Road Trip – Darrington and Vashon

After Washington Pass, Jen and I once again took Toni and Misti’s advice and headed to our next locationā€”Darrington. Back in the day, I drove past this town several times on the way to the Sauk River. I never thought much about it, since I didn’t own a bike yet. Then again, Darrington didn’t have trails yet. But that has changed.

In an effort to bring in more tourism dollars to the small lumber town, a network of trails has been built around the logging roads above the valley, and the work they have done is simply amazing. They have everything from beginner singletrack to loamy tech in the woods to big-boy river gaps. It’s pretty good up here, and our only regret was not having more than one day to ride.

After we finished checking out the soon-to-be-classic Out Of The Blue trail, Jen and I headed to the ferry terminal, caught a ride to Vashon Island, and hung out on the water for a much-needed rest with our good friends Steve and Anastasia. Their beach-front cabin is the perfect place to unwind. Plus, Murphy got another chance to be a water dog.

And finally we headed home, visiting both my 92 year old grandpa Clint, who’s my hero, as well as my older brother, his Fiance, my nephew, my mom, and the rest of the family in southern Washington. Perhaps the highlight of the whole trip was ripping around the neighborhood in my brother’s original right-hand-drive Mini Cooper. I need one of these in my life.

Hey guys. You cookin’?

The Mini Cooper was headed in for paint, but my brother held off a week so I’d have a chance to drive it. I’m so glad he did. This thing is so much fun.
