While not racers ourselves, Jen and I are huge fans of the World Cup Downhill Series. So, given the opportunity to take an hour train ride and get off at Leogang, we jumped at the chance. Think of Leogang as a scaled-down version of Whistler. It’s not as big, and there aren’t as many trails, but the trails they do have are incredible, and one of them just happens to be one of the steepest lines on the World Cup circuit. We missed the World Cup by a couple weeks, but the course tape and finish arch were still in place. For the record, World Cup tracks are serious.
Watching the best in the world ride those lines on television gives you absolutely no indication of just how gnarly they are in real life. It’s the only time on the trip where my trail bike was out of it’s class. Luckily, Leogang also has a pretty awesome freeride trail with A-Line-sized jumps and some of the biggest, steepest berms I’ve ever ridden. Jen and I skipped out on our annual Whistler trip to come to Europe this summer, so it was very fitting to finish off the riding by banging out lap-after-lap at another world-class bike park.
