Things have been a bit grim for the last couple weeks. Temps went through the roof, and it was sun tanning weather at our place below LCC. Instead of skiing waist-deep goodness like we were during the closing days of 2014, we have been making due with what we have. Jen and I got in a quick day of ice climbing in Provo, and we also got to check out a sweet backyard ice rink in Park City. But now, all the ice is gone, and the snow has been grim. So, when it decided to snow, even a few inches, Jamon and Dan were game to get out.
The plan was to ski a lap in Silver Fork, another in Days Fork, and then finish with the Hallway Couloir and ski out to BCC. Dan’s binding broke on the bullet-hard skin track, so he had to bail early. Then Jamon and I got to the ridge and realized we had botched the skin track a bit and were on top of Days, not Silver. Oh well. We skied some surprisingly good snow in one of the couloirs on the East side of the bowl, and then we skinned up to the tell-tale pipe at the top of the Hallway.
Despite the aspect being nearly identical to some good snow in Days, the Hallway was a couple inches of dusty snow on top of a skating rink. It was definitely the least fun time I’ve had heading down what is my favorite line in the Wasatch, but it was still a lot better than sitting on the couch. Plus, as I write this, it’s absolutely nuking outside my house, so things are looking better.
